Lessons based on basic piano chords are about as far from all of that as you can get without actually walking away from the piano. It probably takes years of practice before your results are enjoyable for anyone other than your built-in fan club (parents and grandparents). In traditional lessons, you learn sheet music, music theory and either children’s songs or classical compositions. What they’re picturing as “normal” are probably traditional lessons plus lots of at-home practice.
